Frequently asked questions | CV’s

What type of CV is best to use?

This depends on the type of role you are going for – a chronological style CV showcases your most recent experience so this type of CV is best if applying for similar positions or to show progression. The Functional version focuses on your skills and achievements, rather than the roles you were in, so best used if applying for something different to that of your most recent position.

Should I include a covering letter?

If the application ask for one, then definitely! If it is not a requirement, it can still provide an introduction to your CV and show the recruiter how matched your skills are for the role, think of this as bonus selling space and an opportunity to show you have made additional effort and stand you out from the crowd.

How far back should be career history go?

We recommend displaying 10-15 years of employment history, depending on the relevance to the role you are applying for.

How do I know if a company is using an ATS system to filter applications?

It may be best to assume all organisations are using these as part of their recruitment process, so to tailor your CV for the role and include the relevant key words. Usually large companies use these or for vacancies that could generate a mass volume of applicants; if you visit the Careers page on the company website and you see the wording ‘powered by’followed by a brand name – this often indicated that an ATS system is being used.

How to get CV past the an ATS?

Tailor it to the role, using the job description and person specification to showcase your relevant skills, strengths and experience and be sure to mirror the language / terminology that they have used. Consider the formatting of your document too and avoid anything that could be ‘skewed’ by the software. Keep your CV to two pages where possible and try to ensure your achievements are measurable.
